Elizabeth Ann Seton
(Patron Saint of our Parish)
"Look Up to the Skies and Love God"
Elizabeth Ann Seton
This first native-born American saint was born on August 28, 1774 in New
York and raised in the Anglican Church. She married a merchant who died in
1803; they had five children.
She was received into the Catholic Church on March 14, 1805. Estranged from
her family because of her decision to become Catholic, she founded a girls'
school in Baltimore in 1808 with the blessing and encouragement of the
bishop. In 1809 she founded a congregation of nuns, the Sisters of Charity
of St. Joseph, as their Superior, she became "Mother Seton". By the time of
St. Elizabeth's death in 1821, her congregation had twenty communities
devoted to the care of orphans, the sick, and above all the parochial
schools. She is considered the founder of the Catholic School system in the
United States.
